It is a marker that means there is no text (n/t) in the message, just the subject line. If you see (n/t) or (nt) in the subject line, then that means that the writer's message IS the subject line, and that if you click on it to read the message you won't find anything because nothing was written there. Folks put it in the subject line so the reader will know not to waste their time trying to read a message that wasn't typed.
